while processing today’s annoying junk du jour, I finally figured out why “Congratulations” is rankling me so much when I know it’s said with the best of intentions.

It’s because we are, in essence, being congratulated for breaking the condom. That wasn’t our method of birth control, but it’s the best analogy for what did happen.

And yes, that will be a punch line at some point.

I think I remember an interview of Ralph Macchio (aka the Karate Kid) on Arsenio Hall many years ago, in which he announced that he and his wife were expecting, and everyone applauded, and he replied that he thought it was strange, because it was like everyone cheering that he had sex. 😉 So it’s probably something like that for you, I imagine. Well, think of it this way. It probably comes from an old social tradition of congratulating people on reproducing, because for as many times as people have sex, it doesn’t always produce a baby, and many years ago, it was more important to have many children for the survival of your farm or business. So it probably stems from that. Congratulations on conceiving, because maybe you might not have been able to do so before! 😛
